Israel lies in the western part of Asia, while Japan lies in the eastern part of Asia. However, Israel is referred to as a Middle Eastern country in most cases in Japan.Have you ever had doubts about the propriety of the term "Middle East"? When and how did the term "Middle East" first come into use? In the 20th century, the term "Middle East" was first used to refer to the geographical location and distance from Europe, while the "Far East" referred to East Asia, including Japan. Value judgment standards change with time, and it is natural for us to have doubts about the propriety of the name if it remains unchanged. Aren't the terms "West Asia" and "East Asia" more appropriate than the "Middle East" and "Far East" these days when not only Europe can be called the center of the world in this new century? They will be used for many years to come as objective geographical names in the same way as "North America" and "South America".
Unfortunately, the image of the term "Middle East" is strongly associated with the "problems of the Middle East" and "conflict-torn region" for Japanese. The disputes in this area, which had been free from any major conflicts untill the beginning of the 20th century, are mostly attributable to external factors. In the thousands of years of history, there were cultural exchanges and commercial intercourse in the areas of the West and East Asia through the Silk Road. I think it's about time that we form a new value judgment, making efforts to improve the image of the "Middle East" by promoting exchanges between Israel and Japan as countries in Asia, both of which are culturally and historically rich, and by deepening the cooperative industrial relationship at a time when the world is about to change drastically.
